Therapeutic Approach

“Heartwood” is the innermost durable portion of a tree; it is strong and resilient.

Flexible & Individualized Treatment

Flexibility is paramount in our approach to psychotherapy. We always create a treatment plan that reflects each client's unique needs. Through our work as integrative therapists, we weave together empirically derived techniques to propel your therapy work, depending on your needs and desires. Our work is heavily rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic/interpersonal, family systems, and humanistic perspectives.

Therapeutic Relationship

The therapeutic relationship is the partnership that therapists and clients create in order to enact change. Research has consistently shown that having a trusting and comfortable relationship with your therapist is a strong predictor therapy outcome. We strive to develop authentic, empathic, and collaborative relationships with my clients, and to make the therapeutic space safe for exploration, personal challenge, and progress.

Adults

Our work with adult clients is collaborative. We see each individual as the expert on their life experiences, and we act as the facilitator of the change process, working to direct and evaluate the course of psychotherapy over time. Based on presenting concerns, we create goals and share the responsibility of working to achieve them.

Children/Adolescents

When we work with children, we also collaborate with parents, including them as part of the treatment team. Sessions for children often alternate with parenting sessions designed to assist families in developing the skills they need to support their child’s progress outside of the therapy session. We regularly ask for parents’ impressions of their child’s mental health and behavior to help me develop a more complete understanding of their needs and symptoms.

Treatment Teams

To effectively treat some conditions, forming a multidisciplinary team of support is helpful. We regularly collaborate with family members, psychiatrists, primary care physicians, nutritionists, and schools to develop coordinated care.
