Laurie May, LCPC
LICENSED CLINICAL PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR
Laurie May comes to Heartwood Psychology with over 20 years of experience. She has a passion for working with children, adolescents, and adult women.
With over 20 years of experience as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), Laurie May brings a unique blend of expertise, cultural awareness, and warmth to her private practice. Raised in Japan and enriched by a year of college study there, her international background and passion for travel have cultivated a deep respect for global perspectives and cultural humility.
A graduate of Johns Hopkins University’s Clinical Community Counseling program, Laurie has spent much of her career supporting young people as a school counselor, including 21 years at institutions such as St. Mark, Friends School, and St. Paul’s School. For the past three years, she has dedicated herself to private practice, drawing on an eclectic approach tailored to each client’s needs. Whether using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), or mindfulness-based interventions, she meets clients where they are with flexibility, compassion, and creativity.
Specializing in working with children (ages 9 and up), teens, and young adults, Laurie excels at connecting with kids who feel lonely, misunderstood, or have faced social rejection. Her approachable style and gentle humor make her particularly effective with adolescents navigating anxiety, depression, self-harm, life transitions, and the challenges of being children of divorce. Many of her clients, past and present, attribute significant personal growth to her guidance—one teen aptly shared, “She got me through high school.”
In addition to her work with younger clients, Laurie is also passionate about supporting women in midlife and beyond, helping them navigate life transitions, stress, and personal growth. Her openness, cultural sensitivity, and ability to think outside the box allow her to connect with a wide range of individuals, always fostering a sense of safety and empowerment.
Above all, Laurie May believes in creating a therapeutic space where clients feel heard, understood, and supported as they work toward healing and resilience.
